The Challenge

 Conventional gripping systems struggle to adapt to different log shapes. The project explores the use of soft robotics and fluid power technology to develop more adaptable gripping solutions.

 

From Idea to Prototype

Development Process

1. Concept: Creating a sketch and concept for the soft gripper

2. Mold making:Dedicated molds were developed for producing the first soft structures, allowing different geometries and manufacturing approaches to be tested.

 

3.  Material selection:We investigated various materials and reinforcement structures to achieve the appropriate flexibility and mechanical properties of the gripper.

 

4.  Prototypes:Prototype development went through several iterations, during which we tested various designs, shapes, and manufacturing processes.

 

5.  Force testing on prototypes:Measurements of the push/gripping force were carried out on a specially designed 3D-printed device fitted with a force sensor.

 

6.  Hydraulic control:A dedicated hydraulic system was developed to operate the experimental gripper, providing power supply, regulation, and control of the soft actuators.
