SOFT LOGGING - Soft Robotic Hydraulic Log Gripping System

The SOFT LOGGING project focuses on developing advanced gripping systems for handling logs using the principles of soft robotics and fluid power technology. At the Laboratory for Fluid Power and Controls, we research materials, design solutions, and hydraulic systems that enable the development of safe and adaptable gripping concepts. For a detailed description, follow this link.

The Challenge

Conventional gripping systems struggle to adapt to different log shapes. The project explores the use of soft robotics and fluid power technology to develop more adaptable gripping solutions.

Development Process

SOFT LOGGING – system sketch

1. Concept: Creating a sketch and concept for the soft gripper

SOFT LOGGING – hydraulic actuator

2. Mold making:Dedicated molds were developed for producing the first soft structures, allowing different geometries and manufacturing approaches to be tested.

SOFT LOGGING – gripping technology

3.  Material selection:We investigated various materials and reinforcement structures to achieve the appropriate flexibility and mechanical properties of the gripper.

SOFT LOGGING – gripper prototype

4.  Prototypes:Prototype development went through several iterations, during which we tested various designs, shapes, and manufacturing processes.

SOFT LOGGING – gripping force measurement

5.  Force testing on prototypes:Measurements of the push/gripping force were carried out on a specially designed 3D-printed device fitted with a force sensor.

SOFT LOGGING – hydraulic control unit

6.  Hydraulic control:A dedicated hydraulic system was developed to operate the experimental gripper, providing power supply, regulation, and control of the soft actuators.
